PRESENTATION

 

 

Richmond 2010 Arts Update

 

 

 

Kim Somerville, Manager, Arts Services, spoke about the diversity of arts in Richmond, and about how the arts provide a sense of pride and community across multi-cultural boundaries and allow people to express themselves and honour the expressions of others.

 

 

 

With the aid of a PowerPoint presentation (on file City Clerk’s Office), Ms. Somerville provided a number of highlights on the Richmond 2010 Arts Update, including the following: (i) 37 of the 83 events that were held across the Lower Mainland during Culture Days were Richmond events; (ii) Richmond was invited to sit on both the National Cultural Days Learning Strategy Framework Task Force, and the Provincial Cultural Days Task Force; (iii) the Media Lab has received tremendous interest and support since it opened in the Cultural Centre; (iv) in the Spring of 2011, the Minoru Chapel Opera Series will include Matinees that will allow older adults to experience the event; and (v) over 1200 children attended the Children’s Festival in February 2011.

That the proposed 2011 initiatives of the Richmond Community Cycling Committee regarding cycling-related engineering and education activities, as described in the staff report dated February 16, 2011 from the Director, Transportation, be endorsed;

 

 

(2)

That staff consider the elements of the Richmond Community Cycling Committee’s vision for cycling as described in Attachment 1 of the report in developing the Mobility and Access chapter of the Official Community Plan (2041) Update; and

 

 

(3)

That a copy of the report from the Director, Transportation entitled “Richmond Community Cycling Committee - Proposed 2011 Initiatives” be provided to the Council School Board Liaison Committee for information.

That the request to Western Economic Diversification Canada to extend the deadline to October 31, 2011 for the Energy Management Retrofit Project (Project #8128) under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Grant Program be supported.

Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project Proposal –Environmental Assessment Certificate Application Review

It was moved and seconded

 

 

(1)

That City Council reiterate its position on the YVR Fuel Delivery Project as follows:

 

 

 

(a)

The City is opposed to the delivery of jet fuel involving the South Arm of the Fraser River and/or having the line going across the City;

 

 

 

(b)

there has been a lack of effective public consultation, and more time is needed for public input, at least until the end of June 2011;

 

 

(2)

That, the proposed City comments identified in Attachment 4 on the Environmental Assessment Certificate Application for the Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project be endorsed for submission to the BC Environmental Assessment Office; and

 

 

(3)

That letters be sent to the local MLA’s, MP Candidates, Federal and Provincial Ministers of the Environment, the Prime Minister, and the Premier stating the City’s position and seeking their support.
