The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.

MINUTES

It was moved and seconded

That the minutes of the meeting of the General Purposes Committee held on Monday, March 7, 2011, be adopted as circulated.

AGENDA ADDITION

There was agreement that “a City contribution to the Japanese earthquake fund” be added to the agenda as Item No. 2.

There was agreement to vary the agenda to deal with Item No. 2 first.

CITY OF RICHMOND CONTRIBUTION TO THE JAPAN EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI DISASTER RELIEF FUND

Councillor Steves raised the matter of the possibility of the City making a contribution to match employee contributions to the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund.

The Chief Administrative Officer, George Duncan, referenced a previous tsunami disaster fund for which City staff had made a fundraising effort.  He noted that Council had supported a matching contribution which had resulted in significant contribution from the City.  He continued by stating that he thought a matching contribution towards the Japanese earthquake disaster fund was an excellent gesture.

It was moved and seconded

That staff report back to the next Regular Council Meeting on options available to the City to contribute to the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund, including matching city employee contributions to the fund.

Richmond Community Foundation presentation

The meeting was recessed at 4:07 p.m., while staff checked to see if the delegation from Richmond Community Foundation had arrived.

The meeting reconvened at 4:12 p.m., with all members of Council present except Mayor Brodie and Councillors Linda Barnes, Sue Halsey-Brandt, and Bill McNulty.

Since the delegation from the Richmond Community Foundation was not present, it was decided they would be invited to make a presentation at a future General Purposes Committee meeting.
