With the aid of a PowerPoint presentation, Leo Kiu, Chair, Richmond MS Walk Committee, accompanied by Heidi Jakop, MS Society Liaison and Ray Miller, Richmond MS Walk Committee Member, provided the following information: |

Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
the MS Society of Canada’s mission is to be a leader in finding a cure for MS, thereby enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
the MS Society of Canada’s Client Services offers (i) information and referrals, (ii) supportive counselling, (iii) support and self-help groups, (iv) recreation and social programs, (v) financial assistance, (vi) education, and (vii) advocating services; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
every year, the MS Society of Canada hosts seven walks across the Lower Mainland; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
the MS Scotiabank MS Walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Garry Point Park; |
|
|||||
|
§ |
the event has two routes –2 km and 4 km; and |
|
|||||
|
§ |
walkers may enjoy snacks and refreshments, and entertainment at the finish area. |
|
|||||
|
Mr. Kiu then thanked Richmond City Council for the Mayor’s proclamation – May 2014 as MS Awareness Month. He invited Council to the event and requested the City’s support in the form of a donation. |
|
||||||
|
Mayor Brodie thanked the delegation for their presentation and requested that additional information regarding the MS Society of Canada’s services be circulated to Council. |
