BRITANNIA HERITAGE SHIPYARD HISTORIC ZONE - HISTORY

(Report:  June 26, 2008, File No.:  06-2025-20-003/Vol 01) (REDMS No. 2471726)

Committee complimented the work done by Denise Cook, of Denise Cook Design, on the ‘Britannia Heritage Shipyard Historic Zone Interpretation Plan’ of September 2006.

Discussion ensued between Committee and staff on the following matters:

§

all details on capital projects prior to 2000 can be put in chronological order and given to Committee;

§

the history of No. 1 and No. 2 Murchison Houses;

§

work on Phase 2 is to be completed before the end of 2008, and work on Phase 3 will extend into 2009;

§

a future staff report will address fencing the Historic Zone and charging admissions to visitors to the site;

§

the site is designed to represent the 1920s, a period when it changed from a cannery to a shipyard.

In response to a query, architect Michael Barnes of TBR Architects advised that Phase 2 work would meet the desired heritage values and that during Phase 3 all interior interpretations will be compatible with the 1920s era.

In response to a further query, Mr. Barnes advised that he will review the windows on the Chinese bunkhouse.

In response to a request from Committee, Jane Fernyhough, Manager of Heritage and Cultural Services, stated that when future information on the Britannia Heritage Shipyard property is forthcoming, staff will submit it along with all past information so Committee has information regarding the entire scope of the work undertaken.

It was moved and seconded

That detailed interpretation and exhibit plans for each of the five buildings within the Historic Zone be brought back to Council for approval before tendering Phase 3.
