Anthony Marr, Vancouver Animal Defence League, requested City Council to give consideration to a Shark Fin Ban in Richmond, and spoke about:
· |
the extensive media coverage the matter is receiving; |
· |
the cruelty factor associated with shark finning, as sharks are pulled out of the water to have their fins cut off and are then thrown back into the water and left to die; |
· |
the ecological impacts of shark finning. It was noted that sharks are slow reproducers and apex predators; |
· |
the endangered species factor, as a third of the approximately 400 species of sharks are endangered, and consumers do not know if the shark fins they consume are from endangered species; |
· |
how the sale and trade of shark fins is in violation of federal law, and that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans does not allow shark finning in Canadian waters; |
· |
Mr. Marr’s recent presentations and lobbying efforts with the Cities of Port Moody, Coquitlam, Burnaby and North Vancouver; |
· |
how the City of Toronto has banned the possession, sale and consumption of shark fins; |
· |
the feasibility of both the Cities of Vancouver and Richmond simultaneously implementing a ban on shark fins; and |
· |
the prestige and symbolism associated in Chinese culture with the consumption of shark fin soup at weddings and other banquets. |
R12/12-7 |
It was moved and seconded

(1) |
options for a simultaneous ban with the City of Vancouver; |

(2) |
any standard educational plans related to shark fins with information on what is currently in place, and what could be in place with or without other steps; |
