Item No. 11 – Museum & Heritage Strategy

Mr. Graham Turnbull, 9531 Saunders Road, Chair of the Richmond Heritage Commission, spoke in support of the proposed Museum & Heritage Strategy, and about the need for a new museum for the City.

Mr. Peter Mitchell, 6271 Nanika Crescent, spoke about the uniqueness of the City’s heritage.  He also talked about the location of a new museum, indicating that it was important that the museum be located close to, or become, a tourist destination.  Mr. Mitchell suggested that the location of a new museum should be considered in conjunction with the City’s transportation system, hotels, and wherever a convention and exhibition centre might be sited.  He then proposed a number of suggestions, including a museum day pass, and the offering of a discount to visitors who were members of museums located in other areas.

(Cllr. Dang returned to the meeting – 7:55 p.m.)

Item No. 9 – Steveston Museum & Post Office

Mr. Mitchell commented on the possible closure of the Steveston Post Office within the Steveston Museum and the challenges being faced by the Post Office with respect to Canada Post.  He provided information on a unique post office in Toronto, Ontario, which was in operation as it had been 150 years ago, and was now a tourist destination.  He talked about the need to make the Steveston Post Office a destination point for tourists which was open on Sundays to provide a place for visitors to mail their post cards.
