1.

COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISORY STRUCTURE

(Report: Oct. 12/01, File No.: 0100-20-CACP1-01) (REDMS No. 523670)

The General Manager, Community Safety, Chuck Gale, reviewed the report. A discussion then ensued which included the following information:

a task force differed from an advisory committee in that a task force was project based with a set objective and start/finish date;

the "template" terms of reference for each task force would be modified to be specific to the task and presented to Committee for approval;

the two projects identified on page 3 of the report as potential task forces, would provide an opportunity to assess the merits of a task force vs. advisory committee;

if the new Community Policing were proceeded with (subject to Council review), each community police station would have a consultative group associated with it;

the current members of the Advisory Committee on Policing, would be invited to be a part of both of the task forces presently under consideration.

The Chair of the Advisory Committee on Policing, Mr. Jim Lavery, was present and the Committee Chair thanked Mr. Lavrey, and the members of the Advisory Committee, for their past dedication and commitment to their role.

It was moved and seconded

(1)

That the Citizens Advisory Committee on Policing be discontinued;

(2)

That the Mayor send a letter of appreciation to each former member of the committee;

(3)

That the Advisory Task Force model be selected as the preferred advisory structure;

(4)

That the template terms of reference for an Advisory Task Force, to work with the Community Safety Division, be endorsed; and
