Waterfront Coordinator Position for Britannia Shipyards and Imperial Landing

(File Ref. No. 11-7141-01) (REDMS No. 6766200)

Staff noted the Blue Cabin floating artist residency is a temporary two-year program and that discussions with community partners will take place to look at options to further utilize the space in the future.

Discussion ensued with respect to the role and responsibilities of the coordinator position to support the presence of heritage vessels at the docks, further facilitate the programming for heritage vessel visits and grow relationships with other heritage vessel owners.  Additionally, during the first year of the role, staff would be further articulating exactly how these operations are going to work in a more detailed way, including working with neighboring facilities in the coordination of marketing opportunities for the area. Staff further noted that any future consideration to continue the temporary coordinator position would undergo a rigorous review.

A brief discussion ensued with respect to revenue sharing. Staff noted that following preliminary discussions the Society put forward a request for revenue sharing of 50/50, but there has not been any further discussions. Staff also noted that the potential long range revenue is challenging to determine at this time.

It was moved and seconded

That Option 1, funding for the one-time expense of $84,871 for a temporary Waterfront Coordinator position, be considered in the 2022 budget process as detailed in the staff report titled “Waterfront Coordinator Position for Britannia Shipyards and Imperial Landing,” dated October 15, 2021 , from the Director, Arts, Culture and Heritage Services and the Director, Parks.

Opposed: Cllr. Au

In addition to the recent referral to staff to propose options for general and multi-use flexible programming pertaining to the Phoenix Net Loft, it was suggested that, concurrently, staff undergo a similar review of Scotch Pond to identify potential opportunities for the area.

It was moved and seconded

That staff review the original proposal for Scotch Pond enhancements, including locating the Estuarium on the banks of Scotch Pond, and that such review be done concurrently with the Phoenix Gil Net Loft review.

Minoru Centre for Active Living Cleaning Standards

Staff noted that attendance at the Minoru Centre for Active Living is growing each week and that they are committed to ensuring a clean environment is provided.

Storm Update

Staff provided a brief update regarding the unprecedented recent rain storm, noting that all flood mitigation systems in place performed very well.  A review of the response provided, existing flood prevention systems and risk mitigation will take place later in the month.

It was moved and seconded

That the meeting adjourn (4:51 p.m.).
